A spectacular wattle in full flower. A medium shrub, it can get to around 2 to 3 metres high and 2 metres wide (I have seen some only 30cm high). It is quite bushy and dense for a wattle, but in flower, in spring, the branches are weighted with the masses of golden ball flowers and can appear droopy mis-shapen. Fast growing, can be short lived or last several decades. A worthy addition to my native garden, and a delight in spring. Seeds can be seen in December and have a decorative curved spiral appearance, for collection, monitor closely as seeds are released immediately or within 1-2 days of maturity. Often produces little seed. I recommend not pruning. Birds and insects love it to.
Found throughout of Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Naturally grows in dry or moist soils, well drained gravels or sandy soils and adapts well to clay. Likes full sun to dappled shade. Frost tolerant and attracts seed feeding birds.
These seeds need to be pretreated before sowing in Spring or Summer: Scarify Seeds: Seeds have to be soaked in boiling water, then left to sit overnight or until they have swollen with water – they will double in size, then sow in ordinary way and they will germinate easily. Best sown in spring then planted out next Autumn. I did a YouTube video so you can see the seed, scarification details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P3iHboENVY
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo, this one was growing in my garden near Gunnedah, NSW. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
