Common Duckweed – Lemna major, Pond weed, Duck weed ONLY AVAILABLE AUTUMN, WINTER, SPRING, but I can take backorders now and then post when it is cool enough.
The difference between Lemna major and Lemna minor is a slight difference in size. Obviously with minor being the slightly smaller leaved one. I attached a side by side photo so one can clearly see the difference in size.

Freshwater plant of the genus Lemna. A floating aquatic that forms dense, bright green mats. I love it as it absorbs any excess nutrients in the water, keeping my pond crystal clear and healthy. Plus, single celled creatures live in it, create food for my native small fish.
Plants have one, two or three leaves with a root hanging in the water. They have small air spaces to aid buoyancy. Reproduction is by division. The roots are sticky and this enables them to adhere to the plumage and feet of birds. This is a very efficient means of dispersal.
Humid and Temperature tolerant, meaning it grows all across Australia. It has rapid growth and is easy to harvest, it bears high potential for the cost-efficient use in wastewater treatments, as Lemna minor has been shown to remove heavy metals like lead, copper, zinc and arsenic from waters with non-lethal concentrations. One particular study found, that more than 70% of arsenic was removed after 15 days. It is particularly good at helping to make water healthy, water that has been affected by septic overflows; which is pretty much every little back Creek and river in Queensland. (Don’t get me started on the nonchalant nature of people when it comes to the septic overflows.) Duckweed scooped off such areas, can be used for garden mulch. Best done after maximum growth, the plants can be harvested and used as soil amendment or compost material – providing water was not too contaminated in the first place. Poultry and Grass Carp are quite partial to Duckweed. It is also a suspected ‘carbon capture’ plant, that can cool the earth! by reducing global CO2 levels.
Not known to be weedy in Australia, but is naturalized in some areas. I’ve noted there does seem to be some confusion about this particular plant in Australia, aswell with many other types of Duckweeds, Azolla’s, Frog bit, Watermeal, Water Lettuce…… I have witnessed so-called experts even stating “no! they’re all banned, they’re all weeds”. This is completely not true. Don’t listen to tyrants going on with their power tripping tyrannical speeches about weeds. So many tyrants have no idea what they’re talking about, and jump onto bandwagons, and just like hearing the sound of their own authoritive voice. This particular Duckweed, is NOT a weed, despite its name.
It does have the potential to take over a water habitat, but in Australia, there are other factors that can keep it in toe easily, and it’s all good – it doesn’t do any harm, unlike a serious noxious weeds.
You will receive as photo shows, a good-sized portion in a Ziplock bag, mail can take up to 2 ½ weeks, so I do not recommend purchasing in Summer (50/50 chance if it survives the Australia post), but Autumn, Winter, Spring, it should be fine, with June being the best time. But any time, it still is a risk ordering this plant in the mail, it needs light.
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo, these plants are growing near Mackay, QLD
